The Department of Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery is the first and only dedicated Department in Kerala. Itcommenced functioning on Friday, 22nd November 2013.
Specifically targeted towards Lung cancer, Emphysema, Broncho Pleural Fistula, Bullectomies, Unilateral and Bilateral Bronchiectasis, Empyema, Non Resolving Pneumonia, Decortication, Pleurectomy, Lung Biopsy in the treatment of Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD), Esophageal disorders and Chest Trauma.
Other common procedures include palliative surgery for effusion of any cause - liver cirrhosis, chylothorax, breast, GI and lung malignancy, Curative Surgeries, Palliative Resections in advanced lung malignancies – (Debulking, Chest Wall Resections) TB surgeries - (Hemoptysis, Cavity, Abscess, MDRTB, aspergilloma).
Excision of all types of Mediastinal tumours and Surgery for Myasthenia.
Facility for AFB Culture and Drug Sensitivity especially in MDRTB and Facility for Frozen Section enable immediate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
VATS – Video Assisted Thoracoscopy Surgery
VATS-Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (Keyhole Surgery) or Endoscopic Surgery of the Chest is one of the exciting advancements in Chest Surgery. It is an alternative to many open procedures. There is no age limit for this procedure which has minimal complications.
Advancements in Mediastinoscopy enable to explore the lymph nodes and masses in the entire Mediastinum with almost 100% specificity and sensitivity in TB, Lymphoma, Sarcoidosis, Hypersensitivity Pneumonits and Staging of Lung Cancer.
Linder/ Hurtgen Video Distending Mediastinoscope (first of its kind in India)is the instrument employed.
Airway Stenting in Tracheal and Bronchial Stenosis, Fistulas and Tracheobronchomalacia
Rigid as well as fibreoptic Bronchoscopy along with Rigid Oesophacoscopy, are also available. The Department has a team of expert Consultants in Surgery, Pulmonology, Cardiology, Anesthesia, Medicine, Intensive Care and supported by Physiatrist, Respiratory Therapist and Counsellor.
